When a person's visual impairment cannot be corrected through glasses, contact lenses, surgery, or medication, and when their level of vision is extremely low or entirely absent, this condition is referred to as low vision or blindness. Visually impaired individuals are not to be pitied or seen as helpless. For centuries, people with visual impairments have been marginalized, socially isolated, and deprived of both material and emotional support, often ignored and overlooked by society. They have long been seen as a "bleeding wound" of the community.
However, through financial and social support programs, our government has taken educational and rehabilitative measures to support visually impaired individuals. As a result, visual impairment is no longer perceived as a chronic social issue.
In our project, a camera placed in a box mounted on the front of a bicycle captures real-time video. Using custom-developed code, objects in the image are detected, and their distances are measured. According to the distance, audio feedback is provided through a speaker—enabled by artificial intelligence—which announces how far the object is.
Technological solutions developed for visually impaired individuals range from simple audio feedback systems to advanced object recognition and environmental sensing technologies. These innovations help individuals gain more awareness of their surroundings, carry out daily tasks more independently, and increase their ability to interact socially. For example, AI-supported applications can identify objects around the user and provide verbal feedback through voice commands, helping them better understand their environment and improve their daily life experiences.
