Abstract

Buildings may need to be demolished due to reasons such as completing their economic lifespan, natural disasters, or urban renewal projects. Ensuring that demolition is carried out safely and in an environmentally responsible manner is crucial for both public health and sustainable development. This study focuses on the controlled demolition using explosives, a technique commonly employed in demolishing large and complex structures. The method involves strategically placing explosives on the structural elements of the building to induce a controlled collapse. Proper selection of explosives, borehole design, charge amount, and detonation sequence are essential parameters for the success of this method. The study also examines potential environmental impacts during demolition, including projectile debris, air blast (noise), ground vibration, and dust emissions. The devastating earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, have emphasized the need for safe demolition methods, particularly for heavily damaged structures. In this context, the study outlines the planning and execution steps of explosive demolition and discusses critical safety and environmental considerations.
